Welcome to The Calming Corner!!

The Calming Corner is a mindfulness based studio dedicated to bringing the self-regulation, emotional awareness and self acceptance principles of mindfulness to the children and families of Norfolk County! 

What is mindfulness for kids?

When thinking of kids and mindfulness, the best thing we can do is imagine mindfulness as the time in between a feeling, emotion, sensation and the actions that follow. This time in between is when the child recognizes the emotion and how it feels in their body, and then thinks about what they are going to do next. This processing is where they have the option to make a "mindful choice." Mindfulness essentially leads to changes in their processing, because of their increased self-awareness. This leads to an increase in self-regulation.

My name is Melanie, and I am happy you landed on my page! It means you are already curious about mindfulness and how it can positively impact your child's development. 

​

Regardless of if you are here because you are parent unsure of how to handle some of the stress responses your child is exhibiting and you're looking for some help, or you just recognize the merits of mindfulness and are hoping to have your child attend a group class, I'm here to guide you!

The Calming Corner opened in April of 2023, it came about as the result of working in the public education system for the last fifteen years. For a long while, I noticed that families needed services outside of the classroom. The Calming Corner is a collection of ideas that have come together to support the development of children and families. My goal is to create a space for children where they can embrace who they are, learn the skills to be successful with everyday expectations, and create lasting and rewarding relationships that will improve their overall well-being for all of their lives.

I believe it is important that we look at the whole child - it can be easy to lose sight of the fact that above all we are all human. We can get lost in the "behaviour," that our children are exhibiting as a result of their own stressors, but we must remember that every big reaction is a form of communication. These big reactions tell us that for some reason, the child doesn't have the skills needed to regulate their emotions and impulses. My goal is to teach them these skills through the practice of mindfulness based self-regulation, and empower them with the confidence to know they are capable of being successful, they are empowered to be themselves and they can take charge of their own choices.

Through the use of coaching and group classes, I aim to empower both children and parents with the skills needed to bring that independence, happiness and increased quality of life to them!

Educational Assistant Certificate

The Educational Assistant Certificate has given me the knowledge and skills to support students within educational settings. It gave me a starting point for my into the world of student support and made me want to learn more. 

2007-2009

Educational Assistant Diploma

Mohawk College

The Educational Assistant Diploma allowed me to gain deeper insight into the best strategies to support students in the education system. This diploma has equipped me with the knowledge and skills to foster a positive learning environment, create individualized learning plans, and provide assistance to neurodiverse students. Additionally, I have learned how to effectively implement classroom management techniques, collaborate with teachers, and assess student progress. I am passionate about helping students reach their fullest potential and am committed to providing the highest quality of support.

2018-2021

Autism and Behavioural Science Post-Graduate Certificate

Mohawk College

The Autism and Behavioural Science Certificate provided an in-depth understanding of how to support children on the autism spectrum. Through this certification, I gained a better understanding of the theories and strategies related to autism and behaviour management, as well as how to create and implement effective interventions for children on the spectrum. The certificate combines coursework with hands-on learning opportunities that allowed me to develop the skills to successfully work with children with neurodiversities.

Certificate in Leadership Studies

University of New Brunswick

The Certificate in Leadership Studies is designed to provide students with the foundational knowledge and skills necessary to become successful leaders. The program focuses on developing critical thinking, communication, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities. Coursework covers topics including group dynamics, organizational behavior, and ethical leadership. Students will gain an understanding of the principles and practices of leadership, and apply them to real-world scenarios.

The University of New Brunswick 

The Bachelor's of Integrated Studies provides me a unique opportunity to gain an understanding of the skills, resources, and strategies necessary to work with adult learners. Through this program,I am receiving an in-depth exploration of adult learning theory, instructional methods, and assessment tools. This program is providing me an understanding of how to apply adult learning concepts in various contexts, such as parent coaching. The duration of the program is typically two to three years and focuses on courses in developmental psychology, sociology, social science, and curriculum planning. Completion of the program will allow me to be well-prepared to work with adult learners and increase the effectiveness of my parent coaching skills.
